This past Saturday was “Meet the Mustangs Family Fun Day” at MHS from 2pm-5pm.
This past Saturday was the new kickoff for homecoming week as we had players
from high school field hockey, football, soccer, volleyball and
cheerleading at our fields running activities for Mustangs of all ages.
Nice weather days are numbered, so we hoped to get young kids outside for an
afternoon full of fun, field day activities! All activities were FREE of
charge. Concessions were open for food purchases. We hope to make this a regular event in the coming years!

College News

At a recent Collegeboard workshop our counselors attended, a Financial Aid representative from St. Joseph's College shared the following information:

For the 2016-2017 college year, FAFSA filing can begin on January 1, 2015.

For the 2017-2018 college year, FAFSA filing will begin after October 16, 2016.

Starting this year, there will be NO MORE PIN number to sign the FAFSA. You will now have a FAFSA ID. Parents will have their own.

Both the student and at least one parent will use their individual FSA ID to electronically sign the student’s FAFSA.

The SAT is being Redesigned - the new test will roll out in March of 2016.  This year's PSAT that will be taken this fall is designed to coordinate with the Redesigned SAT.

Our seniors who choose to retake the SAT this fall (through January) will take the current SAT test.

Juniors and subsequent classes will take the Redesigned SAT starting in March 2016.

Student Spotlight

Congratulations go to Massabesic High School 12th Grader Devin Adams who has been awarded a “Jack Kent Cooke Music Scholarship.” This $10,000 award confirms what many of us who have been fortunate to hear Devin play, already knew, that Devin Adams is one of the best high school musicians in the United States!  Devin will appear on “From the Top”, a PBS and National Public Radio program, which features outstanding high school musicians. This program comes to Maine in October to tape at the University of Maine Collin's Center.  From the Top is an NPR program that features some of the nation's best young musicians.  From the Top and the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation have awarded more than $2 million in scholarships to exceptional young musicians.  Each year, From the Top chooses approximately 20 exceptional pre-collegiate musicians ages 8-18 to receive the Award.

Congratulations, Devin! WOW!

Taylor Dorais, a student in Mr. Magaw's Current Events class emailed Senator King in regard to the issues surrounding Iran's Nuclear Weapons.  Taylor  received a very lengthy and appreciative email from Senator King in return.  Well done Taylor!!!

Class News

Class of 2016

Seniors are responsible for emailing their senior Write Up and sending in a picture for the yearbook by the set deadlines. Please click here to review the Senior Due Dates with your son/daughter and please encourage him/her to turn in the necessary items on time.  Thanks very much!

For those parents interested in putting in a recognition ad,  click here for the Baby ad information. You have two options: you can create/design the ad yourself online or send in the info to Mrs. Stephenson. Please email her with any questions: mariannestephenson@rsu57.org

Class of 2019

We are anticipating a great Homecoming week, but are still in need of parent volunteers and donated items for our Hallway Decorating Contest.  If you are interested in helping the Class of 2019 at any time this year, please email your son/daughter class advisors, Ms Gearinger or Mr. Hazen at kerragearinger@rsu57.org or scotthazen@rsu57.org.

Department Highlights:

Students are working with the concept of Composition in Mrs. Tompkins class. Students took an image from popular media, such as a magazine, and re-composed, then painted, the image 3 times, focusing on strengthening, changing, and adapting the original Composition to now fit on one large piece of paper.  They had the choice to work in acrylics, watercolors, gouache or tempera paint.  Everyone approached the challenge in different ways and the results are varied and exciting! Please take a look at some of the examples attached.

Social Studies

Our Social Studies staff is busy improving their knowledge as follows:

On September 25,  Mr. Magaw attended a conference at Yarmouth High School put on by Brown Universities Choices program. The topic was "Engaging Students in International Issues: The Choices Approach".

Next week, Mr. Ryan will be attending a training for Civil Rights Team facilitators.

On October 5 & 6, Mr. Lavertu, Mr. Magaw and Mr.Poulin will be attending state wide curriculum meeting,  looking at revisions to our present Social Studies standards.

On October 26 Mr. White and Mr. Lavertu will be taking AP Government students to the Maine ACLU workshop in Portland. Students participate in mock trials dealing with the Bill of Rights and Supreme Court cases. The event is put on by Maine lawyers who work voluntarily with our students for the day.

On October 30 Miss Hunter will be attending a Global Education conference hosted by the Maine Council for Social Studies. The information she gathers from this conference will enhance the teaching of our  21st Century course.

An Important Science FYI

Due to a recent adjustment in our science curriculum, you will notice in Empower under the topic “Earth and Space Composition & Structure of the Earth: Levels 4 and 6 that  students will be marked as “Auto Promoted (AP)” when they are proficient  as opposed to a 1-4 score.  Current 7th, 8th and 9th grade students will be marked proficient in this manner for these learning targets so as not to impact their status in regards to the Latin grading system during their high school years, as we make the transition between shifting high school and the middle school targets.  Please contact your son or daughter’s 9th grade teacher if you have any questions.  Thanks!

Last year, I moved from Colorado to take the position of District and HS librarian for RSU57.  I love working at MHS, and have been re-organizing our library so that our users can easily find and check out library materials for research or for pleasure reading.  One of the new projects that I am very excited about is now ready to roll.  I have been authorized to assign Portland Public Library cards to any current MHS students who request them.  This card will give your child access to various excellent databases for research as well as digital and audio-books through the Portland Public Library! Since these items are digital, they will automatically return to the PPL system, unless the user renews before the due date.

If you are interested in volunteering in the HS library, even just once in awhile, please give me a call at extension 2282, or come and visit! I always have different projects going and and would appreciate assistance.  Thank you,

Mrs. Lorna Stiefvater
