Guidance Info

MHS Guidance has created a new one-stop web page for summer enrichment program announcements and opportunities that benefit our students. The first opportunity was just posted for a summer Investigative Journalism Workshop at Boston University. Many more will be following over the next several months, so be sure to bookmark your access to these summer opportunities at http://bit.ly/1Yi2uFa.

Megan Bonti, a student from Sanford came to MHS to speak to Wellness Classes on Suicide Awareness and Prevention and shared personal experiences. She discussed how she dealt with it-giving tips to students on how to build resiliency and handle stress, so as to keep it from building up to the point of considering this terrible option.  Students and staff shared how they were impressed with her presentation.

The MHS Wrestling Team competed at the Jarvis Wildcat Invitational in Athens Pennsylvania this past weekend.   MHS Wrestling was lead by Trevor Walton with a 2nd place finish and Noah Schneider and Zac McGrath with 3rd place finishes.  Great Job Wrestlers!

26 members of the MHS Culture Club took Manhattan by storm the weekend of the 11th and truly made every minute a joy. They were joined by staff and parent chaperons who shared nothing but praise for our students. Our students fund raised for most of the trip and truly were a remarkable group of young people. Special thanks goes to all for demonstrating their “Mustang Pride” throughout the trip!

MHS Student-Musician Devin Adams performed on the “From the Top” radio “First” program on Maine Public Radio last week!  You can hear his performance at the link below, along with a nice bio on Devin.  Great job Devin!  http://www.fromthetop.org/musician/devin-adams/

MHS Music Department Highlights

Our Music students have been working hard over the last few weeks prepping for auditions, concerts and other music activities.  Eight Students have successfully passed their AllState auditions in November and will be performing with The Allstate Band, Chorus and Orchestra in May at the University of Orono.  Congratulations go to: Devin Adams –Bassoon, Aaron Brown – Bassoon, Michael Gimenez – Percussion, Kathleen Harper - Harp, Aaron Leach – Flute, Justin Leach – Trombone, Rebecca Malloy- Alto, Jared Vigue - Tenor.

Recently our MHS Chamber Singers performed at the Lion’s Club Christmas Luncheon. Students really enjoyed this opportunity to sing and look forward to sharing their talents for other audiences in our communities.

Our Choral Concert took place on Thursday December 17th, with three ensembles performing. The MHS Chorus, the Chamber Singers, and for the first time, the intro to Musical Theater class which performed its own original musical entitled “Groovy Juvy”. Many hours of rehearsal went into these performances and it showed as our students were excited to showcase their work!

The Music Department recently did a “sheet sale” Fundraiser. If you ordered sheets they were delivered to the high school the evening of the 17th. Thank you to everyone who participated in this fundraiser.

January will be an exciting month for our music department. Students who have been accepted into the District Festival will be performing on January 23rd. The Choral department is looking forward to its trip to UNH on January 30th to participate in the UNH Choral Gala. This year’s piece is John Rutter’s “Gloria” For Chorus, Organ, Percussion, and Brass Ensemble.

Special thanks go to Noah Gallant (student) and Nathan Gallant (parent) for donating their time to improve the band storage area! The new shelving looks great!

Athletic Announcements

MHS will be fielding a Unified Basketball Team this winter.  Unified Basketball is an effort by Project Unify to provide athletic opportunities for special education students.  Our team will be composed of non-special education students and special education students playing together on the same team.  MHS was award a grant from Project Unify to support this effort.   Our team will be coached by Elizabeth Cote and Katherine Fournier.   We will be playing teams from across the SMAA, traveling to those schools and hosting games here at MHS.  Games begin in late January and will conclude with a state tournament in early March.  Our students are very excited to start and we are hoping for a great turnout and support for these student athletes.
