                                                            July 12, 2013

Dear Parents, Guardians & Students:

I hope that this letter finds you and your family having enjoyed the first part of the summer. Our year ended on several high notes with: An excellent graduation for the Class of 2013 at the Portland Expo, the 2013-2014 RSU 57 Budget passing, Sophomore Alyssa Wardwell being chosen to serve on the Maine State Board of Education as a student representative, Final Exams having gone smoothly and with Credit Recovery School starting on June 27th. Let me take this opportunity to update you on several important pieces of information:

Trimester 3 Report Cards – Are with this letter. My apologies for holding them back a week as I was hoping we could also get 13-14 student schedules to you, but that is not yet possible.

2013-2014 Student Schedules – Are not yet finalized, as we had to wait for the RSU Budget to pass, needed to make several student schedule revisions and had to wait for 8th graders to finish their Standards/ Learning Targets in order to determine intervention needs for the 2013-2014 schedule. It is our hope to have schedules out to students no later than the first week of August.

iPad Minis for all – Will be the norm for all students at MHS in 2013-2014! With the passage of our district budget the plan is for each student at MHS to receive and use an iPad Mini to increase their learning opportunities during their years at MHS, (part of the state MLTI Project).

What about the “OLD” iPad plan? - Students going into their sophomore or junior years will have a choice to either continue with their current iPad as is, the iPad they have been assigned (this includes the opportunity to own the device after graduation), or switch to the new program and get a new iPad. This fall information about choice will be provided to all so that you are able to make the best choice for your situation. The choice for sophomores and juniors will be to either continue with the program they started, paying all fees, repair costs, etc… or going with the new MLTI program. Incoming freshman and seniors will not have a choice.

Three months ago - We nominated Alyssa Wardwell to be a student representative on the Maine State Board of Education. After completing the application Alyssa took it from there, making it to the interview process as one of 8 and then having her name (one of three) sent by the interview committee to Governor Lepage. Alyssa was selected by the Governor and is now serving! Congratulations go to Alyssa, the Wardwell family and to MHS on her selection! An example of what happens when MHS Students show what they CAN DO!

Amazing opportunity to earn - College and high school credit for juniors and seniors! A college sociology course will be taught through YCCC at MHS this fall. The course will be held at MHS from 3:00 to 4:14 on Tuesdays and Thursdays so students can take the Activity Bus home. Go to the following link for information: http://www.yccc.edu/StudentResources/ConcurrentEnrollment and send an email to Dr. Urbach if you would like to register for this course! Thanks!

Three cheers to - Caleb Fuschillo who followed our school’s mission and vision by supporting an MHS Student who was a victim of the bullying! Super Job Caleb!

Do you or your 2014 Graduate – Need help choosing college, financing options? Sign up at the following link to view the College Financing 101 presentation that will help them make sense of college loans, scholarships, grants, work-study programs, and more. http://www.collegeweeklive.com/en_CA/guest/appregistration/refcode=COU_ColFinancing_05232013?mkt_tok=3RkMMJWWfF9wsRoks6TMZKXonjHpfsX66uslWK%2B1lMI%2F0ER3fOvrPUfGjI4FT8phI%2BSLDwEYGJlv6SgFTbjHMbhz1bgLWxU%3D

Class of 2014 – Our Guidance Dept strongly recommends that you re-take the SATs this fall.  An improvement of even a couple hundred points overall will help in the college admissions process and improve scholarship opportunities! Colleges will only see your best scores! Your chances of improving your score are enhanced because you now know the setup. Research shows that a relaxed mind is able to focus better during assessment situations along with students having gained at least a few months of academic knowledge by the time of the next test on October 5th. The registration deadline is September 6th. Please go to www.collegeboard.org to register online.
