                                                August 16, 2011

Dear Parents, Guardians, and Students:

It is with great anticipation in starting my third year with you as Principal of Massabesic High School that I look forward to the 2011-2012 School year. In my second year as your Principal I was fortunate to assist the staff of MHS in implementing several important program changes during 2010-2011 including but not limited to: the Trimester Schedule, online learning opportunities, the MHS Academic Intervention Program, streamlined procedures for students being able to take college courses along with increasing responsibilities and expectations for student learning and behavior. These along with other efforts have led to some positive signs of increased student success at MHS including but not limited to: record enrollments in college courses (highest in York County), impressive improvements in course success rates (40% decrease in total failures) and the largest graduating class in MHS history (267)! We still have much to do and can’t rest on these successes, but we do need to “stop and smell the roses” as we are seeing many positive signs of increased student success!

Recognition for the above results needs to first go to our students for both the improved results they are demonstrating and for the efforts they are making each and every day! Special thanks needs to go to our staff and to you our parents and guardians for the hard work and trust that is being shown and supported through the efforts of each. As mentioned previously we have a tremendous amount of excellence and untapped potential in the students of Massabesic High School. It is clear that WE are using our school’s new direction to improve our results one student at a time! By continuing to work together (students/parents and guardians/MHS Staff), in support of our school’s collective efforts we will continue to improve the education offered at Massabesic High School! Please know that with everyone’s help and support WE are making MHS the best that it can and WILL be!

School day starting and ending times are a changing – for 2011-2012! In looking at our daily schedule we found 15 minutes of dead time from when the last bus drops off in the AM to when the first set of busses picks up in the PM. In order to maximize student-learning time at MHS the school day is being adjusted, with the school day now beginning at 7:30 AM this fall (please see schedule times on page two).

Opening Day – Is Tuesday, August 30th. Students will start the day with their Advisor in order to collect schedules and info. Advisor lists and maps will be spread out around each building to assist students in seeing where they need to go. We will then adjust our schedule accordingly.

Census Verification Form – With this letter is your son or daughter’s information form. If there are any changes to be made please make them to the form and have the form returned by your son or daughter to the Advisor ASAP! Thanks very much!

In closing please know that the staff of Massabesic High School believes strongly that ALL students at MHS can meet and exceed higher expectations in our classrooms and on our playing fields. As I always tell students “we can do better” is a non-negotiable for me, our staff and for each one of them! We can always find solutions to problems or difficulties if we look at our data, check out research, review promising ideas and get the “right people on the bus”!

We look forward to your support and your joining us on the MHS Bus for the upcoming school year!

Very truly yours,

Christian M. Elkington

Principal
