Principal's Memo to the Students 3-12-12

posted Mar 8, 2012, 3:54 AM by Massabesic highschool   [ updated Mar 8, 2012, 3:57 AM ]

As we start the Spring Trimester I want to wish each of you well in your efforts both in and outside of our classrooms and school. I ask that you remember two things as you begin this trimester: You only get one chance at a first impression and that there is nothing like a fresh start! The start of a new trimester brings with it much opportunity for each of you!

I also need to review the following with you:

MHS Mission Statement – Has Changed! At the top of this memo you will see a new mission statement. During this past fall and early winter, members from our communities, including students from MHS, participated in developing new RSU 57 mission and vision statements. Upon review of the new statements the teaching staff of MHS voted unanimously to adopt the new district statements as our own, instead of having two separate ones.

2012-2013 Course Request Forms – Are due this coming Friday, 3-16-12. Please remember that teacher signatures (core subject areas only) and a parent signature are required before students can have their classes entered into our scheduling program. You need to have this form signed and returned to your Advisor by this date. Thanks!

Student IDs - Please don’t forget that starting on April 1st you will be expected to show your MHS ID at school when asked by a staff member. Please also remember:

-       Students will be expected to show their MHS ID and/or their license in order to get into our dances.

-       Dance guests will also be expected to either show their school ID or a picture ID to get into our dances.

-       If you don’t have your MHS Student ID or lost yours, the main office to purchase a new one for $5.00

Our school’s new expectation is no different from many of the places your parents, as well as your guardians now work and/or that you will be expected to work in or live in shortly. We believe that the above will make for a more respectful and safer learning environment at MHS! Thanking each of you in advance for following the above!

Student absences and calling home – As you probably know, last month we started a new system to better communicate student absences. Parents and/or guardians now receive a call after BLK 1, if you are not present for your BLK 1 Class. This change means that parents and guardians may receive two calls each day if you are absent for more than just BLK 1. Please make sure that if you are going to miss a BLK 1 Class that you let your parent/guardians know so they are not worried when they get our call. Thanks!

Honored Student-Athlete of the Week - Is a new initiative started by our athletic department to recognize student-athletes’ academic, athletic and/or civic contributions in our communities. Congratulations go to the following MHS student-athletes who have been selected: Sam Chaves, Ryan Dodge, Savanna Arral and Morgan Reny!

Block Six - Students who have had an academic difficulty during the Winter Trimester, which has cost you earning a credit, need to come to BLK Six Interventions after school! If you just missed or were close to earning a credit and need assistance getting over the top you need to take advantage of these opportunities!

MHS Alumni – Share! Each year we invite graduate of MHS to return to discuss what life is like at college. This year’s returnees shared the following during our Alumni Talk:

Top Ten Tips:

1.     Expect it to be difficult and be PROACTIVE with asking questions.

2.     Find a way to organize your time…one of our alumni even made a daily calendar

3.     Extra curricular activities are great and a fun way to meet people outside of class, but don’t over commit.

4.     Consider college an “investment in yourself” (Tyler Morin) and take advantage of every opportunity, including Internships. As a result of this…many of our Senior Alumni already have jobs when they will graduate that stemmed from their Internships.

5.     AP classes do matter…if credit is earned, it can be a tremendous time and money saver

6.     Scholarships (and keeping them) can depend on earning a certain GPA…”it’s a great motivator to do well.” (Elizabeth Mulcahy)

7.     Roommates can be a challenge! COMPROMISE is the name of the game.

8.     Professors genuinely want you to do well…but the onus is on you. Their door is open…but you must take the first step.

9.     If you don’t know the answer to something …find someone who does. From Financial Aid to RA’s …there are built in systems that are there to help.

10.  “When I went to college, I knew exactly what I wanted to study…until I changed my mind. What was important was picking a college that had available the areas of study that were of interest to me! That way when I changed my major focus, I was able to do it easily.” (Owen Cunnane)
