Re: Standards-Based Diploma Feedback Process
Law 1422 has been on the books for several years with the important Standards-Based
Diploma adjustment completed during the 2012-2013 Legislature. The Maine Dept. of Ed
has spent the last several years trying to assist districts with their next steps. During this
time we have been spending a considerable amount of time researching what the
opportunities could be for our students and learning in moving toward the mandated
Standards-Based Diploma. Our efforts have been based on improving the instruction and
learning our students receive at Massabesic High School and in our district as a whole.
Only through an approach and focus system-wide, will real growth and progress be made.
We made visits, invited guests to visit with us and have belonged and worked with a
cohort of schools learning together.
Through this work we came up with a number of ideas for discussion and planning. Upon
further review and research the recommendations were submitted to the RSU 57
Curriculum Committee. We received final approval at the March RSU 57 Curriculum
Committee Meeting and are now expected to receive further input from all stakeholders.
Please understand that the next step in this process as well as the expectation from
our District’s Curriculum Committee is to collect feedback from parents, guardians,
students, and staff.
The feedback process started this May with some initial meetings first being held at our
district’s elementary schools. This process was to continue at the school level, but was
changed as concerns about this process were shared. These concerns are understandable
as information flys to all very fast in today’s world.
Our structure for sharing information has changed to a new format of Informational
Meetings. The first set of these meetings will be held in the Massabesic High School
Auditorium at 6:30 PM:
- Monday, June 15th
- Tuesday, June 23rd
- Late August and early fall, follow-up dates will be shared shortly
We hope to see you there!
